Your views on teenagers registering as sex offenders?

Hi, im doing a research paper for school about un-fit laws

One that really caught my attention was that teenagers who send or recieve naked pictures via text messages could face legal action and one of them is to register as a sex offender.

one section

';In a more serious case, 6 Pennsylvania high school students were given child pornography charges for sending nude pictures to each other. Three female students, ages 14-15, sent nude photos to two male students, ages 16 and 17. The female students were charged with manufacturing, disseminating or possessing child pornography while the males were charged with possession only. If the students are found guilty, they would have to register as sex offenders for at least ten years.';

If these teens are sending it between each other and not disrtibuting to large masses of people do you think that they should have to register as sex offenders.

That denies them jobs, college, housing and every single aspect of their life. Do you think it is just to do so. They basically face the same charges that a pedofile who takes naked pictures of children and puts them on the internet face. Two very diffrent situations but same punishment? Those laws were never intended for minors and their actions were not endangering the well being of another it was their choice to do so.

I am aware that it is not a right thing to do. But I feel the punishment is way to severe to the situation.

What are your opinions

(i need good quotes from everyday people for my paper)

many thanks!

I call this a miscarriage of justice. Punishment of these ';children'; should be by their parents not by society. They harmed themselves not anyone else. Our Child pornography statutes are to protect children from adult, not to punish children for being stupid. I think if these laws apply to these children the laws must be changed.

I am equally upset when I hear of a boy of 16 or 17 being charged with statutory rape of a 15 or 16 year old girl. That also was not the purpose of those laws. We can prohibit the sex and punish the boy and even perhaps the girl, but it does not rise to the level of statutory rape.Your views on teenagers registering as sex offenders?
Who's to say what was going to happen to those pictures once they are sent? Whats the difference in someone getting the phone and seeing naked pictures of a 14 year old then someone taking the pictures themselves. There's nothing saying that a 14 year old who lets someone else take pictures is doing so unwillingly. Its still naked pictures of a child.

Whats the difference in an adult taking naked pictures and putting them on the net and a child doing the same thing. I dont think there is. Theres no telling if those pics would have ended up on the net or elsewhere.

I'm not sure about the punishment being as strict but i agree with it. They don't understand what they are doing but they know its wrong. And they should be punished accordingly.
