Why do Americans teenagers (mostly girls) like to say the word ';like'; so much?

They say it ALL THE TIME O_oWhy do Americans teenagers (mostly girls) like to say the word ';like'; so much?

Why?

10 points for B/A :)Why do Americans teenagers (mostly girls) like to say the word ';like'; so much?
It actually started a LONG time ago...in the early 80s. It comes from the Valley Girl thing...if you dig deep enough to find the song that Moon Unit Zappa (yup...that's her REAL name!) about Valley Girls, you'll find one of the earliest examples that went nation-wide.

And, like, I'm WAY older than a teenager, and I do it, too...depending on the circumstances.

I'm pretty sure this is the song...that's Frank singing...and Moon Unit doing the ';girl voiceover';.

I think its because we try to explain stuff and we say ';Like'; so we make sure its explained enough. I say like all the time and its like annoying. Another reason I think is, is so its not exactly what we're saying. Or sometimes If we like forget so we have to take a second. It does get annoying sometimes but, we're girls ! :)
like like like like like!

lol jk... it's just a ';filler word';. for ex., instead of saying ';uhm'; or ';uhh'; in between real words they just say ';like';.

sample sentence: ';i just bought these, like, shoes. they're very cute, like, very summer-y, i love them so much!... like, you know!';

i say it a lot myself, its just a habit. i guess someone started saying it a long time ago, and then it became normal for everyone to say it so much.
It came about in the 60's and stuck to modern speech pattern. It is used primarily as a 'time buyer' while the speaker thinks during a conversation or searches for the right words to express him or herself. Each language has its own version of a similar word for the same purpose. For example, in spanish folks will often use...pues...asi es...es que...and others.
after i heard it so much and said it a few times it became a habit. i guess i say it because it just is normal for me. it is kind of like my accent (along with LI accent) whoops i said it and no i didnt even do that on purpose i reread and i saw that i said it lol

please help me with a guy

I only say like to make a comparison to better explain something. Most girls I know do the same thing. I don't know girls who do it all the time but if they do it is just because it is a habit for them.
After hearing a certain word over and over again you tend to find yourself saying it as well. When you hear people say a word a lot the word gets stuck in your vocabulary.
I have no idea, but it's so prevalent there are songs written about it.
I know! its so annoying. Technically like means ';similar to'; so if you interject ';similar to'; where people use ';like';, it sounds completely stupid!
Well, it makes them look more ditsy, and all the jock boiz like ditsy girls because they need someone dumber than them.
becuase its like tottaly cool hip and retro like reallly get with the program its an addiction........like really
because its a cool ';word binder';
They don't know how to speak properly...
My guess is it's another way of saying for example.
Because they can't think of anything else to say........very annoying.
like IDK why
why do older people say you know all the damn time? i blame it on the schools for not teaching us better vocabulary
because their yanks
