Because today's materialistic culture dictates that if you are a young person or a teenager, you MUST have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, and not just any one but the coolest, most popular, attractive one you can convince to date you, and if you don't you must really suck or its because you are mental. But what about people who don't want to date or who are single because they haven't yet found a worthwhile person to date (like I was a lot of the time)? Today's society does nothing to provide for that, what you are asking is just an artificial construct of today's vapid, insincere, marketeing-social-engineered status quo.Why is it so important for teenagers to have a boy friend or girl friend?
Its not that it is important. Its because they feel like they will be alone if they don't have someone else. Which is sad because they usually have friends that they forget about when they get those gfs/bfs. I don't think its attention, I really think its fear of loneliness.

It's not. I'm 16 and I have only had one girlfriend, it lasted about 2-3 years on and off. That's the only one I had ever had and after that, that's the only one I needed. They're a waste of time, really.
